Musical note cake
This is the first of two cakes I made for my husbands 30th Birthday. It is a four layer Madeira cake covered in vanilla butter icing followed by fondant icing with piped fondant musical notes to cover. After taking it to work he came home with just one very small slice for me! So another cake had to be made for the main celebration….!!
I received some advice from our very helpful local cake shop (Margies Sugarcraft) that piping with fondant is much better and longer lasting than soft writing icing.
So here is how you do it – or at least how I understood you do it! Take the fondant icing and knead between your hands until it is soft and warm. Place the desired quantity into a bowl and mix/ chop with a knife until the fondant just starts to loosen. Place this into a piping bag and pipe! The great thing about fondant icing is it wont smudge or smear and remains solid when dry so you don’t have to worry about it being in a warm room unlike writing icing..
